Day 5 - Saintes to Carcassonne

Today would be our second bigger driving day in a row going from Saintes in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region to Carcassonne in the Occitaine region. We decided to take the toll highways today as it would reduce the drive time from 6.75 hours to 4.5 hours for the reasonable price of  about €30. The tolls must be invested back into the highways over here, as they are very well maintained. In addition there are rest stops every 10-15 km that have very clean park and washroom facilities. We stopped at one of these just after Toulouse for lunch and a quick stretch.

We pulled into Carcassonne around 14:00 and located our accommodation for the night.

From Wikipedia:
“Inhabited since the Neolithic Period, Carcassonne is located in the plain of the Aude between historic trade routes, linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean Sea and the Massif Central to the Pyrénées. Its strategic importance was quickly recognised by the Romans, who occupied its hilltop until the demise of the Western Roman Empire In the fifth century.
Its citadel, known as the Cité de Carcassonne, is a medieval fortress dating back to the Gallo-Roman period and restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc between 1853 and 1879. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997 because of the exceptional preservation and restoration of the medieval citadel. Consequently, Carcassonne relies heavily on tourism but also counts manufacturing and wine making as some of its other key economic sectors.”

Our apartment is literally located just below the Cité de Carcassonne, and the view is indescribable.

View From Our Patio This Evening 😱

After unloading the car we headed up to explore the walled city.  I’m not too sure how to describe it adequately, but it was truly unbelievable.  It is another marvel that we have seen on this trip that we will remember forever.  Inside the city they have adapted some of the buildings and structures to serve the tourists.  This includes shops, restaurants, hotels, and bars.  Audrey and Amanda went in to browse a few of the shops and Gerry and I didn’t miss the opportunity to have a glass of wine on a patio.  The girls thought this was rather hilarious when they came out of the first shop they were in, and joined us for a pop and a coffee. 🤣

Red Wine And A Rosé

Coke Zero And A Cappuccino

We continued exploring for an hour before heading back down towards our place.  But not before Gerry and I decided we would come back up here for dinner and have Cassoulet tomorrow night.  Pretty much every restaurant was advertising it, and it was on my bucket list to try for this trip. (stay tuned…)

We stopped at a small grocery store near our apartment to pick up some fresh supplies, and the girls made a fresh tomato pasta dish along with a delicious French-style salad.  The rest of the evening was pretty relaxed, not doing too much.  Tomorrow we will head into the downtown area to visit some shops and take in a little more history.

Just a quick post today.  Thanks again for reading our updates!!  Bonne nuit!

Interesting Tidbit:
We have a watched TV a couple of times in the evenings while unwinding.  I noticed that any time drugs, alcohol, betting, smoking are mentioned or displayed, a short warning comes up at the bottom of the screen.  It doesn’t matter if it’s an advertisement or the actual show, and only lasts for as long as the item is displayed.  I thought this was quite interesting.
